Jonathan's lifelong love of meteorology was triggered by a close encounter with a tornado at age 7 in his hometown of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin. Erdman studied physics at the University of Wisconsin, then completed his Master's degree working with dual-polarization radar and lightning data at Colorado State University.
Jonathan began his career at The Weather Channel in 1998, serving in a variety of roles including short and medium-range forecasting. He became the network's first weather producer, responsible for keeping on-air meteorologists briefed, researching story ideas, and creating graphics that help explain those weather stories for three different shows, including one with Jim Cantore.
Erdman moved to weather.com in 2010, where he now serves as a senior digital meteorologist. He's responsible for briefing staff journalists on current and upcoming weather stories, coordinating coverage from the field, writing articles and presenting videos appearing in The Weather Channel app, weather.com and Weather Underground. His insights have been featured in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and other media outlets.
Over his 22-year career, Erdman has covered over 100 Atlantic hurricanes, several hundred winter storms, and dozens of severe weather outbreaks. Among these included Hurricane Katrina's landfall in 2005 and the April 2011 Tornado Super outbreak in the South.
