MEview: Cross Platform User Generated Content (TigerSpike)

Objective
Among UK newspapers, Metro has the youngest readers and they are highly active in social media spaces: 85% of urbanites are registered on one social network, and they are 74% more likely than average to have watched a user generated video (TGI.net wave 14).

Metro’s readers engage heavily with user generated content and therefore the solution needed to reflect that and open this audience up to traditional news and online advertisers.

Solution
TigerSpike designed, developed & maintains the MEview social video sharing platform for Metro which enables users to upload & view videos across online and mobile.

  • Users are incentivised to participate by offering financial rewards to authors of downloaded content.
  • Metro then uses this content as part of their editorial mix providing users with their ‘15 Megabytes of fame’.
  • Metro also commercialises the videos with pre and post roll advertising.

Results

  • Over 1.5 million unique visitors till the end of December 2009. 100% Year on Year growth
  • Video views: Over 3 million with 97% Year on Year Growth
  • Over 9,000 registrations
  • Over 40,000 submissions

MEview continues growing rapidly and TigerSpike was commissioned by Metro to redesign the site and the development contract has recently been extended into year 3.
